Over the years, America’s music industry has celebrated the rise of many white American stars, leaving many to ponder over the fate of Black American stars in the US entertainment industry. However, the world has recently witnessed the emergence of celebrated black American stars such as Jay-z, Beyoncé, and others. And Kendrick Lamar appears to be the new legendary Hip-Hop star, who has risen to global fame.

How is this true? I’ll explain.

Kendrick Lamar and His Musical Career

Lamar is an African-American rapper and songwriter. He embarked on his musical career as a teenager under the stage name, K-Dot. He released a mixtape that garnered local attention and led to his signing with Indie record label, Top Dawg Entertainment.

Is Kendrick Lamar America's Newest Hip-Hop Star?

The star is in possession of a number of career accolades, including twelve Grammy Awards. Just this 2018, his album “Damn” has become the first non-classical and non-jazz to receive the Pulitzer Prize.

The Pulitzer board described the album as a “virtuosic song collection unified by its vernacular authenticity rhythmic dynamism that offers affecting vignettes capturing the complexity of modern African-American life”.

Lamar released his fourth studio album called “Damn,” on April 14, 2017. In January, “Damn” won the Grammy for best rap album and was among the nominees for album of the year.

About Pulitzer Prize

The Pulitzer Prize is a prize awarded to Americans for distinction in the arts. It’s named after the Jewish, Hungarian-born, American newspaper publisher, Joseph Pulitzer. Joseph Pulitzer did not call for such prize in his will but had arranged for a music scholarship to be awarded each year.

This scholarship later materialized into a full-fledged prize. That’s for a distinguished American musical composition of significant dimension that has had its first performance in the United States during the year.

In 2004, the terms were modified to read for a distinguished American musical composition that has had its first performance or recording in the United States during the year.

Is Kendrick Lamar a product of hard work?

Working hard towards goals could be difficult. Many fall on their way, while many give up on their goal because of challenges. Only a determined few make it to the top.

Consequently, Lamar has made it clear that it pays to work hard. As an African-American, he never gave up despite singing for long without getting any tangible results. He never imagined hitting the Pulitzer Prize would be possible — an award many songwriters, musicians, and writers have worked so hard to get.

Kendrick is, therefore, proof of one thing– no matter where you come from or who you are, your dream is always valid and achievable.
